Child Protection Week:
Protecting children from illiteracy
This week marks the beginning of Child Protection Week. Did you know that, through our programmes, we protect children from illiteracy?
Here’s *Liso’s story:
When Liso started on our Literacy Programme (Shine Literacy Hour) in Grade 2, he wrote one sentence per session like: ‘I like my bog’ and ‘I hav a red shet’.
Towards the middle of Grade 2 he had a breakthrough and suddenly all he wanted to do was to read! He’s reading 6 to 8 readers a session. He now writes stories that are up to two pages long and reads with confidence.
We are passionate about protecting children from illiteracy and giving them the tools they need to learn to read, so that later in their schooling they can read to learn.
