Numeracy Programme

Numeracy Programme

It has been proven that the earliest interventions yield the best return on human capital investment. Building a foundation of number concepts improves learners’ mathematical outcomes in future years.

The LifeMatters Foundation has developed a curriculum-based Numeracy Intervention Programme called ‘Fun with Numbers’, which helps Grade 2 learners build a solid mathematical foundation. Learners receive two one-hour sessions per week from trained volunteers. The programme allows learners to have fun while practicing foundational mathematical concepts using the interactive games and activities in the ‘Fun with Numbers’ Manual.

We are currently running our Numeracy Programme in 6 beneficiary schools.

Meet Andrew

Andrew* is an eager learner yet struggles with A.D.H.D. He began his year on our Numeracy Programme not knowing how to count on his fingers or do any form of bonds. He finds that he focuses better when he works one on one, because in class he says, “there is so much noise in class that I can’t do my work as well as I want to”.

Andrew wrote a LMF assessment at the end of Grade 1 achieving a mark of 25%. He then wrote the same assessment in June of Grade 2 and achieved 83%. Andrew says, “I don’t need fingers anymore, my brain does the work for me!”

Meet Alex

Alex* came onto our LifeMatters Numeracy programme as his teacher said that he was struggling with Maths in class. After spending a few months having some “Fun with Numbers” intervention, Alex’s result jumped from 60% (end of Gr 1 LifeMatters assessment) to an awesome 97.5% (Gr 2 June LifeMatters assessment). What is more exciting is that in September, his school assessments saw him achieve 81%! He caught up to the curriculum requirements … and then some! It was a joy to see his dedication and enthusiasm and we’re so proud of his improvement.
