Literacy Programme

Literacy Programme

Our Literacy Programme is running in 7 underprivileged schools in the Southern Suburbs and is based on the model designed by Shine Literacy.

We offer literacy intervention to Grade 2 and 3 learners. Our trained literacy volunteers sit one-on-one with Foundation Phase learners. We have received permission from the Western Cape Department of Education and the school to take learners out of class.

In each session our volunteers work with learners by playing reading-related games and practicing their reading and writing skills in different, fun ways.

The programme allows children to learn at their own pace to overcome areas of difficulty and instils a love of books and reading by creating a fun and interactive environment that captures their attention.

We are seeing improvement rates of up to 78% in individual results of the most at-risk learners who participate in this programme.

Qa’id* just loves to read. He was below grade level at the start of Grade 2, and was able to move to Near Level in just 6 months on our Literacy Programme. That’s a 34% increase in a very short space of time, when learners not on our programmes only saw an average increase of 24%. We are very proud of Qa’id and his commitment to his reading.
